In 2007 Rob Burke (Head of Music) initiated a 3 week study tour for students to travel to the Monash Centre in Prato (Italy) to study European jazz. This is now a yearly event and in 2013 Rob, with Director of the Academy of Performing Arts - Paul Grabowsky, Stephen Magnusson and Mirko Guerrini from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music travelled to the Monash University Prato Centre in Italy (just outside of Florence) for a three-week study unit. The course included workshops with many of the finest jazz musicians in Europe including John Taylor and Diana Torto. A highlight being a recording with seminal European Jazz musician Enrico Rava with staff and students.
Enrico Rava is an ECM recording artist having played with luminary artists such as Pat Metheny, Michel Petrucciani, John Abercrombie, Joe Henderson, Richard Galliano, Miroslav Vitouš, Andrea Centazzo, Joe Lovano, Gil Evans and Cecil Taylor.
The CD was recorded over 2 days taking the Italian approach to music making - relaxed but with intensity. Noted was the beautiful trumpet sound and passionate lyrical lines produced by Enrico that has potent meaning and harmonic perfection.
Finally, the student’s performance on this recording is testament to the international quality of practice at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music - Monash University; a quality that continues to set new standards in Jazz performance.

Difficult to name a favourite track, however if I was forced to choose an all time favourite album this would certainly be up there at the top. I'm in the UK but it was a friend in South Africa that introduced me to Gondwana. Absolutely beautiful album from start to finish, amazing musicians and composition both. Thank you, it inspires me to become a better musician. rai scott

Had everyone had warning of what to expect? "Opener" set the scene for those unsure newcomers. "Long Way Home" - an apt title: what a break. Idris wanders off leaving Leon, Emre and Satin to find the way... with a joyful reunion at the end.
The journeys continue through the rest of the show - Leon constantly providing that anchor around which the wonder this world - and, of course, Other Worlds - fly at their own pace.
You may know of Janek Gwizdala - if not Hidden Treasures gives hints. Peter Jones
