about

Homage is the exciting new release by the extremely talented Sam Anning, Allan Browne and Marc Hannaford.

The Trio perform versions of works by Jazz luminaries such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Thelonious Monk alongside original contemporary pieces

Initially drawn together by their respect for early Jazz composers, the Trio developed this collaboration over two years at Bennett’s Lane and further at the 2008 Wangaratta Jazz Festival.

Sam Anning, Bell Award Winner and MCA Freedman Fellowship Finalist on bass
Allan Browne, The Don Banks Music Award and Bell Award Winner on drums
Marc Hannaford, Wangaratta piano competition Finalist, the MCA Freedman Fellowship Award Finalist and Bell nominee on piano

three planets
orbits akimbo, ellipses
and circles, a bump
here and there,

mass,
velocity
inertia
all gravitational

dialogue
in harmony, melody
rhythm
instinctual, emotional

all locked in a solar groove,
the infinite pulse

of the sun …….…………

- Allan Browne

“improvising on material that references the early decades of jazz always carries the risk of sounding like a parody and resulting in static, non-interactive music. The fact that this trio is able to tackle these pieces and create music “in the moment” rather than relying on clichés and historical references is a testament to the energy and attitude each member brings to this task. I’d like to thank Al and Sam for their musicality and energy all through our development of these pieces. it’s been great fun! “
- Marc

“thanks to marc and allan for being a constant source of inspiration, cheers”
- Sam

"i guess we are all pilgrims
voyagers in devotion
this is our homage
a frozen moment
captured at odd velocities

I have trudged for years
the journey the reward
especially in this inspiring company
however fleeting"
