about

The Drunken Boat is the Rimbaud inspired latest release from the Allan Browne Quintet.

Composers Eugene Ball and Geoff Hughes have used the 19th century French poet, Arthur Rimbaud’s sacred text (with an additional final verse contributed by Stella Browne) as inspiration for the Quintet’s second release.

The album, The Drunken Boat follows the verse structure of Rimbaud’s great work – his hymn to the quest of unknown realities. However the Quintet’s recording is presented in five suites each of five of Rimbaud’s verses. The intention being that the music should be listened to continuously, at least through each of the suites. The somewhat longer than usual track titles allude to the adventures encountered by this rampant vessel, released by its handlers and stimulated by consuming its own cargo of absinthe.

The quintet, formed in 2002, includes Geoff Hughes (guitar), Eugene Ball (trumpet), David Rex (alto sax), Nick Haywood (bass) and Allan Browne (drums) with guest vocals from Stella Browne.

Je ne puis plus, bainé de vos langueurs, oô lames,
Enlever leur sillage aux porteurs de cotons,
Ni traverser L'orgueil des drapeaux et des flammes,
Ni nager sous les yeux horribles de pontons.
