about

The debut release for Jazzhead, Ears For Civil Engines is a collection
of 13 original tunes by Australian jazz luminaries and features some
outstanding individual and ensemble playing.

This set has everything: cutting edge modern jazz, cool jazz, bebop,
swinging blues and piano based mood pieces. It’s a saxophone love-fest on Rob Burke’s Brotherhood with Burke on tenor, and Julien Wilson and the scorching Ian Chaplin on alto saxophones.

Pianist Sam Keevers provides two fine self-penned trio tunes, as does fellow pianist Tim Stevens on the stark title track and the coldly beautiful Meaning In Sights Unseen, both featuring the excellent rhythm section of Nick Haywood (bass) and Allan Browne (drums).

Paul Grabowsky does the piano duties on a tune by trumpeter Scott
Tinkler, and Tim Neal weighs in with some pithy Hammond Organ on
Julien Wilson’s Törsten.

An illustration of just how good Australian jazz talent is - great songs
and great blowin’.
